This one day course is tailored to staff supporting people that have a learning disability and have difficulties with their relationships (e.g. to make and maintain friendships, have conflicts with their staff team), to manage their emotions, with a relative lack of capacity to withstand life challenges impacting on their sense of self.

Objectives/Aims of Course

To be able to support service users with a range of complex difficulties and provide compassionate care to help the person feel valued, hopeful and empowered.

Course Programme

The course will cover the following;

  • Develop understanding of Personality disorder (PD)
  • Consider how PD in LD may compare to someone without an LD
  • Look at a why a formulation approach to PD can be useful
  • Reflect on the emotional impact this type of work can have on us
  • Briefly cover Evidence Based Interventions
  • Consider strategies, and share ideas to support staff in their role of enabling service users to feel empowered and hopeful about change

Course Deliverables

This course will provide a certificate in training for Learning Disabilities and Personality Disorder.
